JupyterHub for TUWEL Courses

Starting from 2026, TU staff can request JupyterHub courses through our self-service platform: jaas.datalab.tuwien.ac.at

What is JAAS Self-Service?

JAAS Self-Service is a web application that lets university instructors create and manage JupyterHub course configurations. Administrators approve courses, and the resulting configuration is automatically deployed to our JupyterHub infrastructure. This allows instructors to freely configure their JupyterHub environment while ensuring that resources are allocated efficiently and securely.

Core Workflow

  1. Instructor creates a course → status pending
  2. Admin approves → status active. (Trusted users auto-approve.)
  3. Instructor configures images, groups, quotas, members, and datasets

Step-by-Step Guide

Step 0 (Optional): Subscribe to Updates & Communication Channels

We recommend you:

  • Add Florian Jäger and Josef Taha to your TUWEL course as LV-Leiter

This helps us help you fast!

Step 1: Create the JupyterHub Activity in Your Course

In your TUWEL course, create a new JupyterHub activity. This will be the access point for students to launch their JupyterHub environment.

Step 2: Create Your Course Through Self-Service

After logging in at jaas.datalab.tuwien.ac.at, TU Wien staff can create courses.

If this is your first time creating a course, you will be prompted to provide a reason.

Step 3 (First Time Only): Wait for Approval

A staff member will review and approve your first course request. Once approved, you'll be marked as a trusted user and can create future courses without approval.

Step 4: Start Working!

Once your course is approved and configured, you and your students can start using JupyterHub. Configure your course settings including images, groups, quotas, members, and datasets through the self-service portal.

Legacy Process (For Non-TUWEL Moodle Instances)

For other Moodle instances, we still use the manual request process. Please provide us with:

  • The URL of your course page
  • Required functionality:
  • Choose an image that fits your needs or tell us which additional features are required. Images are based on Jupyter Docker Stacks.
  • Resource estimation:
  • How much memory (RAM) per user?
  • How much disk space per user?
  • How many students?
  • Do you require access to GPU resources?

Important: To set up JupyterHub in your TUWEL space, you must add Florian Jäger, Matthias Matt, and Josef Taha as LV-Leiter to your TUWEL course.
